Known for her famous “Yassssssssss,” Mariah Huq of Married to Medicine is adding new titles to her resume. Producer and designer are just a few hats she’s wearing alongside housewife. In this one-on-one interview, Mariah explains why she turned down the opportunity to be a Real Housewife of Atlanta in order to pursue something original.
JET: You’re the first African-American woman to have the title of “concept by” on Bravo’s Married to Medicine. What was your inspiration and vision for the show?
Mariah Huq: We have tons of shows out there, but I felt like something was missing. I was approached about doing the Real Housewives of Atlanta, but instead of doing that show, my husband and I felt like we had more of a story to tell by introducing people to the medical community. People had never seen anything outside of the scripted shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs. We thought Married to Medicine can give people an inside look into the lives of doctors and their families, and expose them to some of the sacrifices. My inspiration was my life. The fact that we lived, worked, and played with doctors, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to give people a voyeuristic perspective into our life.
JET: As an African-American woman, do you feel pressure to uphold that image on reality television?
MH: I do and I don’t. I do, because I’m on TV and I’m a wife. But I’m a mother before anything and I’m a woman of God, so of course I want to have an accurate portrayal of myself. However, from the producing stand point, I had no creative control of the past two seasons. Moving forward, next season I do have creative input.
JET: So there will be a season 3?
MH: If we’re renewed.
JET: I heard recently you were considering freezing your eggs. Will there possibly be a baby next season?
