SMH. I’m definitely not one of those people who believe racism is a thing of the past and we are now living in a post racial society. No way. However, the ignorance and authentic stupidity of some people continues to surprise me. Nina Davuluri (pictured above) was crowned Miss America 2014 on Sunday night. Davuluri is the first contestant of Indian descent to win this title. It wasn’t long before “the racist’s” took to twitter to express their disbelief in the outcome. Here are a few of my favorite tweets:
#MissAmerica ummm wtf?! Have we forgotten 9/11?
Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you.
Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11.
Man our president now our new Miss America isn’t even American I’m sorry but Miss Kansas I salute you your the real American #MissAmerica
Those tweets deserve another stern SMH. Click here to read more of the foolery. I will be the first to admit that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) isn’t the best, but I clearly wasn’t taught the “cookie cutter” standard of what it means to be American. My college years was spent doing a lot of independent research and educating myself with true history, especially American history. I learned the following from Dr. King.
Every morning I wake up and brush my teeth. The tube containing the toothpaste was made in China. I go on to make coffee that either came from Colombia or East Africa. I put on a beautiful silk top that was made in India. I drive to work in my foreign vehicle that was manufactured in Germany. It isn’t even 9 a.m. yet, and this American woman has already benefited from the labor of other countries. But hasn’t that been the tone of America since it was “founded by Christopher Columbus”? We forced the Native Americans (the real Americans) to leave their own land, but made sure we would benefit from their labor. Happy Thanksgiving. African slaves were brought to this country, forced to perform free labor, built the White House, and STILL struggle for justice in America. Who are the “real” Americans and will they please stand up, because I’m tired of them benefitting from free labor, and frankly I’m tired of having this conversation.
Newsflash: There isn’t a “real” American anymore. Gone are the days of your typical all-American White family with blonde hair and blue eyes, living in a house on Main St. with a white picket fence, and a dog named Max. Whether it happened voluntarily or involuntarily isn’t the point, but America is living up to her anthem, and being the “land of the free”. America has become the land of opportunity, attracting people from all over the globe passionate about making here their home. America isn’t a melting pot, causing people to lose their identity as they get mixed into its society. I like to think of America as huge salad, full of individuals not forced to lose their identity while being caught up in the mix.
America is the Trail of Tears. America is slavery. America is the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. America is 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Virginia Tech, Columbine, and Sandy Hook. We are MLB and NBA. We are hot dogs and hummus. We are the Harlem Shake and belly dance. We are Harvard and Howard. Our struggles, differences, similarities, pain, and triumphs are what bring us together.
Congratulations Nina Davuluri! Your victory acknowledges how far America has come, and how far we have to go.
Your cousin Nikki
P.S. Have you guys ever seen What Kind of Asian Are You? This whole situation made me think of this. Hilarious. Enjoy!
